Disappointing data scuttle plans for large-scale AIDS vaccine trial. The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) has decided not to fund full-scale clinical trials of the leading AIDS vaccine in its pipeline. Even so, the U.S. military and the makers of the vaccine, in collaboration with researchers and officials in Thailand, are still planning to go ahead with a large-scale trial of a similar preparation, and Merck is working with NIH to move another vaccine into midsize trials.

U.S. HIV and AIDS cases reported. The U.S. CDC has released its finalized mid-year HIV/AIDS surveillance report, including updated statistics on AIDS incidence trends from 1996 through 2000.

AIDS research: Longtime rivalry ends in collaboration. AIDS researchers Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier, who fought a long and bitter battle over credit for the discovery of HIV and the resultant blood test, this week announced plans to collaborate on developing AIDS vaccines for Africa and other impoverished regions. The two also plan to merge their vaccine approaches.

VaxGen forms joint venture to build manufacturing facilities in California and South Korea. VaxGen, Inc. (Nasdaq: VXGN) and a group of South Korean investors announced the formation of a joint venture, which will invest approximately $120 million to build and operate facilities in Incheon, South Korea, and in South San Francisco, California.
