AIDScience Perspective:
Vaccine research: Recent data showed that covalently cross-linked complexes of the HIV-1 surface envelope glycoprotein and CD4 elicited antibodies in rhesus macaques that were able to neutralize a wide range of primary HIV isolates, regardless of their subtype or coreceptor use. Broadly cross-reactive anti-HIV neutralizing antibodies: A conversation with Robert Gallo

NeuroAIDS: SIV may hide in the brain. A simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)/macaque model of HIV dementia was used to show that viral DNA levels in the brain remained at constant levels from acute through asymptomatic infection, despite significant down-regulation of viral RNA in the brain after the acute phase of infection.
The Journal of Infectious Diseases 186(7), 905, 1 October 2002 [Read abstract]

Natural resistance to HIV: HIV-specific CD8+ T cell activity in uninfected injection drug users is associated with maintenance of seronegativity.
AIDS 16(12), 1595, 16 August 2002 [Read abstract]

First viral load system to include automation. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Bayer Diagnostics' VERSANT® HIV-1 RNA 3.0 Assay, its nucleic acid probe diagnostic assay for the quantitation of HIV-1 RNA in the plasma of people living with HIV. The Bayer viral load system is the first FDA-approved viral load test that automates critical assay steps.

Regional consultations for CDC's HIV Prevention Community-Based Program. The U.S. CDC plans to plan to convene four regional consultations for input to assist in determining the future funding for the Community-Based HIV Prevention Program.

RNA interference scores another hit. New research in a model of cervical carcinoma cells positive for human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 demonstrated for the first time that short interfering RNA (siRNA) could selectively silence exogenous viral genes in mammalian cells. By silencing one viral gene, the tumor cells stopped growing. Silencing another gene induced apoptotic cell death. siRNA had no effect on HPV-negative cells.

HIV superinfection: A rare event or a major implication for vaccine research and public health? Swiss researchers have documented another case of HIV superinfection in a 38-year-old man who acquired a second strain through unprotected sex more than two years after he was first infected in 1998.

IL-2 increases CD4+ cells in HIV+ patients. Adjuvant IL-2 therapy in immunologic nonresponders resulted in a clinical improvement, suggesting that the CD4+ cell recovery is not only quantitative but involves functionally competent immune cells.
The Journal of Infectious Diseases 186(5), 606, 1 September 2002 [Read abstract]
